987565 Deformation in the Appalachian Foreland: Detachment Structures in the Basal Marcellus Shale, Central New York
نویسنده
چکیده
Décollement zones within the organic-rich black shale members of the basal Marcellus Formation in New York and Pennsylvania have been recognized for some time (Nickelsen, 1986; Evans, 1994, among others). Outcrop study of the upper Onondaga Formation-Marcellus Formation contact at three localities in the central New York outcrop belt (Figure 1) demonstrates that thrust fault structures are present. Given recent interest in the Marcellus as a gas shale reservoir, the relationships among faulting, fracturing, fluid migration, vein mineralization and hydrocarbon maturation in these zones may provide additional insights as resource development proceeds. In addition, the décollement zones are intensely fractured and may serve as attractive targets for horizontal well development. The thrust fault systems described here were active during hydrocarbon maturation in the Marcellus, and are most likely the result of regional deformation in the Appalachian Foreland during the Alleghanian Orogeny.

Foreland basin stratigraphic control on thrust belt evolution
The link between orogenic activity and foreland basin stratigraphy is well established; however, potential controls by foreland basin stratigraphy on thrust belt architecture have not been fully evaluated. Mechanical properties of typical foreland basin stratigraphic successions influence the structural development of fold-thrust belts in predictable ways. Fundamental features of foreland basin...

Evaluating and exploiting unconventional complex oil and gas reservoirs such as the Marcellus Shale gas reservoirs within the Appalachian Basin in Pennsylvania, USA, have gained considerable interest in recent years. Technologies such as conventional 3D seismic, horizontal drilling, and hydraulic fracturing have been at the forefront of the effort to exploit these resources. Recently, multicomp...

We present new geologic maps of the Lake Champlain region of west-central Vermont and east-central New York State. This region contains a shallow-crustal section of an Ordovician foreland basin and a far-traveled thrust system that transported the Upper Cambrian–Lower Ordovician platform-sequence, allochthonous risefacies pelites and arenites and Middle Ordovician basinal shales and flysch. Ear...
متن کاملGeochemical and strontium isotope characterization of produced waters from Marcellus Shale natural gas extraction.
Extraction of natural gas by hydraulic fracturing of the Middle Devonian Marcellus Shale, a major gas-bearing unit in the Appalachian Basin, results in significant quantities of produced water containing high total dissolved solids (TDS). We carried out a strontium (Sr) isotope investigation to determine the utility of Sr isotopes in identifying and quantifying the interaction of Marcellus Form...

The extensional collapse of the Scandinavian Caledonides resulted in rapid tectonic denudation of the orogen, exhumation of highand ultra-high-pressure metamorphic rocks and provided a structural template for the formation of Devonian supra-detachment sedimentary basins. The geometry and intensity of the extensional deformation show considerable variation vertically in the crustal section as we...
